Two pumps, two jobs
Which one do you actually have?
Pump type 01
pump
Job: keeps groundwater out of your basement. It sits in a pit at the low point of the slab, collects water coming through the footing drain, and pumps it outside away from the foundation.
What it handles: clean groundwater only. Never waste.
Where it discharges: outside, away from the house. Discharging a sump into the sanitary sewer is prohibited in most jurisdictions.
When it matters most: sustained heavy rain, spring thaw, and any period where the water table rises. Which is exactly when the power is most likely to go out.
Pump type 02
Sewage ejector pump
Job: moves waste water uphill. If you have a bathroom, laundry or utility sink below the level of the main sewer line, gravity cannot do the work, so a pump does it.
What it handles: waste and solids from below-grade fixtures.
Where it discharges: into the sanitary sewer line. The basin must be sealed and properly vented.
When it matters most: constantly, quietly, every time someone uses a basement bathroom. Failures here are unpleasant rather than merely inconvenient.
Warning signs
When a pump is telling you it is about to fail
Pick the symptom that matches. This is a starting point rather than a diagnosis, but it tells you roughly what you are dealing with before anyone arrives.
It runs constantly
A pump cycling continuously is either undersized, dealing with a stuck float, or has a check valve failing and letting discharged water run straight back into the pit. Continuous running burns out motors quickly.
It never runs
Reassuring right up until the first heavy storm. A pump that has not cycled in months may have a stuck float, a seized motor or a dead circuit. Test it by pouring water into the pit rather than assuming.
Grinding
Bearing wear, a damaged impeller, or debris in the pit. Noise that has changed recently is worth acting on before the motor gives out during a storm.
Visible rust or scale
Corrosion on the pump body or discharge line points to age or to iron content in the groundwater. Both shorten service life and both are worth planning around rather than waiting out.
Sewage odour near the basin
On an ejector system this usually means the basin lid seal has failed or the vent is blocked. That is a health issue, not a nuisance, and it needs attention promptly.
It is over 7 to 10 years old
Most pumps give somewhere in that range depending on how hard they work. Replacing on your schedule costs far less than replacing during a flood, and you choose the timing.

I had a very positive experience with Twin Plumbing Solutions and Parker. He was warm, professional, attentive, knowledgeable, and very easy to communicate with throughout the process. He took the time to explain what he was seeing, discussed the different repair options with me, and gave me a clear written quote. What especially impressed me was how quickly everything was handled. I requested a quote and the work was completed the same day. The price also felt very reasonable for the scope of the work. Parker worked efficiently and carefully, and he even took care of an unrelated clogged half-bath faucet that had not been flowing at full pressure, without charging me anything extra. That was very much appreciated. Most importantly, the plumbing issue appears to be fully resolved. It is now the second day after the work was completed and everything is working well with no problems that I can see. Overall, excellent service, good communication, thoughtful attention to detail, and a very professional experience. I would gladly use Twin Plumbing Solutions again and highly recommend Parker and the team.Posted on Google![]()

Parker is the most responsive and honest plumber I have ever worked with. He answered my call and made arrangements to evaluate my plumbing crisis the same day. His evaluation and visit was free of charge! No service call charge. He was professional and personable and quickly earned my trust. After an evaluation, he provided me with an estimate that was reasonable for the scope of work required. All of his estimates are sent electronically and once I clicked on the accept button, Parker reached out and we got the job scheduled. The day of the work, Parker was good at communicating his estimated time of arrival and was sensitive to my work schedule. The job was completed, checked and tested very quickly. Twins plumbing did an exceptional job, were reasonably priced and were trust worthy and reliable. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better experience.Posted on Google![]()

We’ve had such a great experience with Twin Plumbing Solutions! This is the second time we’ve used their services, this time for a different office location, and once again they were fantastic. Both of our offices are located in DC, which can sometimes make coordinating service a little more complicated. One of our locations is also in a federal building, so there were additional requirements and documentation needed before they could be approved to perform the work. Twin Plumbing Solutions was incredibly responsive and helpful throughout the entire process. They provided everything we needed to obtain approval, scheduled the visit promptly, and got the job done without any issues. Jessy and his team were professional, reliable, easy to work with, and extremely responsive. It’s refreshing to work with a company that makes the entire process so easy from start to finish. We will definitely continue using Twin Plumbing Solutions for our offices and highly recommend them!Posted on Google![]()

Five-star service! I was in a complete panic when my shower valve burst, but Twin Plumbing came to the rescue. They responded and Jesse arrived the very same day I called, which was a lifesaver. Jesse was incredibly friendly, kind, and reassuring from the moment he walked in. He was professional and went above and beyond to be helpful during a stressful situation. To top it all off, the price was great and very reasonable. I will definitely be calling Twin Plumbing Solutions again for any future plumbing needs!Posted on Google![]()

We have a 100 year old bungalow in Takoma Park with one bathroom and a main sewer line that had backed up six times in under two years. The original pipe was terra cotta and tree roots were coming in every few feet. Twin Plumbing lined the whole run with a new pipe from the inside, re-piped the old cast iron stack in the basement, and found and repaired a broken section under the basement floor that nobody had caught before. The job finished right on schedule. What I appreciated most was that they explained what they were doing in plain language at every step, which is not something I've gotten from every plumber I've hired. Professional, easy to have in the house, and straight with me about what they were finding. They also pulled together the documentation I needed for a Maryland historic tax credit application, broken out the way the state wanted it. They didn't have to do that, and it saved me a lot of back and forth. Good work. Would hire them again.Posted on Google![]()

Twin Plumbing Solutions did an amazing job replacing our sewer line. Our entire inside sewer line was completely rotted out, and I was worried we would have to tear up the basement floor to replace it. Instead, they installed a 20-foot trenchless CIPP liner, which allowed them to restore the sewer line without digging up our basement floor. The whole process went smoothly, the crew was professional, and they saved us from a huge mess and costly floor repairs. I highly recommend Twin Plumbing Solutions to anyone dealing with damaged or deteriorated sewer lines! Best plumbing company in Montgomery CountyPosted on Google![]()

I found Twin Plumbing Solutions via Yelp and compared the reviews there to the ones on Google. 5-star across the board, and my experience so far is the same. Jesse has been very responsive to the problems I've had with my garbage disposal and kitchen sink, has explained the issues and solutions clearly, and their prices seem very fair. I'm already planning to have them replace my hot water heater later this year.Posted on Google![]()

This place has saved me twice. Once from a shower that had been broken for over two years. Then less then 72 hours later...my toilet exploded(not really, but it overflowed in an obnoxious way). Now these two things were entirely unrelated but I had no one else to call and they rose to the occasion. They cam out gave me a great price and just saved my Sunday night. I owe them big time. They are professional and kind. I will definitely be calling them back for future plumbing help.
The one upgrade worth making
Battery backup, because storms take out power
A sump pump works hardest during heavy sustained rain. That is also when the power is most likely to fail. A primary pump with no backup is a system with a single point of failure at exactly the wrong moment.
A battery backup system adds a second pump on its own DC supply that takes over automatically when the primary loses power or cannot keep up. It buys you hours of continued pumping, which is usually the difference between a dry basement and an insurance claim.
We size the battery to the pit’s typical inflow rather than selling a standard package, because runtime is what actually matters and it depends on how much water your specific property takes on.
- Automatic changeover, no action needed from you
- Alarm on activation so you know it engaged
- Sized to your pit's real inflow rate
- Also covers primary pump failure, not just power loss

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about scheduling, service areas, or coverage? Read our quick answers below or call us directly at (301) 920-6922
Why does my basement bathroom drain so slowly compared to the rest of the house?
This usually points to the ejector pump struggling to keep up, since basement fixtures rely on it to push wastewater up to the main sewer line. If the pump, basin, or check valve isn’t working properly, drainage from that lower level fixture is often the first thing to slow down. A camera inspection can help confirm exactly what’s going on before any repair is recommended.
Can I install a basement bathroom without a sewage ejector pump?
Not if the bathroom sits below the level of your main sewer line, which is the case for most basements. Without an ejector pump, wastewater simply has nowhere to go, since gravity alone can’t move it uphill to the sewer. If you’re planning a basement remodel, it’s worth having our residential plumbing team walk you through what a properly sized setup should look like.
What's causing the bad smell coming from my basement pump basin?
A sealed basin shouldn’t produce noticeable odor, so a smell usually means the lid isn’t sealing properly, the vent line has an issue, or waste is sitting longer than it should due to a slow pump cycle. Ignoring this often leads to a bigger backup down the line. Our drain cleaning team can also check if a nearby line is contributing to the smell.
What happens if my sewage ejector pump fails during a storm?
Heavy storms often mean more strain on your plumbing system overall, and a failing pump during that time can lead to a serious basement backup fast. This is exactly why an alarm system matters, since it gives you a warning before the situation gets out of hand. If basement flooding is a recurring issue on top of this, our sump pump services team can take a look at your overall drainage setup.
Why did my newly installed ejector pump stop working so soon?
This usually comes down to either a pump that wasn’t sized properly for the fixture load, a check valve issue, or an installation problem from whoever did the original work. It’s more common than people expect with lower quality or mismatched equipment. A proper camera inspection can help confirm exactly where things went wrong.
