Straight Answer for Homeowners

What is CIPP Pipe Patching (Sectional Point Repair)?

CIPP Pipe Patching (also known as Sectional Point Repair) is a trenchless pipe rehabilitation method where an inflatable pneumatic carrier positions a resin-saturated fiberglass sleeve directly over a single broken, cracked, or root-invaded section of pipe (typically 2 to 10 feet in length).

Once inflated inside the line, the resin cures in 60 to 90 minutes, forming a seamless, jointless, rock hard pipe fused to the host wall. It seals leaks, stops root intrusion, and repairs structural cracks for good. There is no need to dig up your lawn, driveway, or landscaping, and no need to pay for relining an entire 60-foot sewer line when most of it is still in good shape.

Choosing the Right Repair

Patching vs full-length lining

The whole comparison, in one table.

CIPP patching Full-length CIPP lining
Best suited to
One isolated defect
Multiple defects or general deterioration
Repair length
Typically a few feet
The full run between access points
Rest of the line
Left as it is
Fully renewed
Relative cost
Lower
Higher
Time on site
Shorter
Longer
Excavation
Access points only
Access points only
Makes sense when
The camera shows the rest of the line is genuinely sound
The camera shows deterioration in several places
Poor choice when
There are defects in multiple locations
There is one defect and the rest is fine
The honest failure mode. Patching a line that is failing generally is a false economy. You fix one spot and the next defect surfaces a year later, and you pay for mobilisation again. If the footage shows deterioration in several places, full lining is the cheaper answer over any reasonable timeframe even though it is the bigger number today. We will say so.
The decision criteria

When patching is the right call

The right call comes down to what the camera actually shows, not a general preference for patching over lining. Here’s how to tell which situation you’re in.
When It Works

Good fit

In these situations a patch does the same structural job as full lining, at a fraction of the cost and time, and leaves a perfectly good pipe alone.

When It Doesn't

Poor fit

If two or more of these apply we will recommend full lining or excavation and explain why, even though a patch would be the easier sale today.

HYDRAULIC FLOW & FLUID MECHANICS

How Can a Pipe Patch Improve Flow When It Adds Thickness?

Homeowners often ask: “If you add a sleeve inside my 4-inch pipe, won’t it restrict sewage flow?” The surprising answer is that flow capacity actually improves, thanks to fluid dynamics and surface friction.

Manning's Roughness Coefficient (n-Value)

In civil and environmental engineering, gravity flow capacity is calculated using Manning's Equation. The rougher the pipe wall, the higher the friction coefficient (n), which slows water and causes toilet paper to grab.

Old Cast Iron

0.013 – 0.015

New & Unworn

Vitrified Clay

0.013 – 0.014

Joint Friction

CIPP Patch

0.009

Glass-Smooth

Lower n-value means less resistance. The mirror-smooth epoxy surface allows wastewater to flow faster, easily offsetting the tiny 3.5mm wall thickness.

Feathered 45° Beveled Edges (Zero Snags)

Cheap DIY or inferior point repair kits leave a blunt 90-degree edge inside the pipe where toilet paper, wipes, and grease catch. Our certified system features tapered 45-degree feathered edges:

FLOW-THROUGH PACKERS

Repairs While Water Continues to Flow

For commercial properties, multi-tenant buildings, or households where shutting down water is inconvenient, we deploy specialized flow-through packers.

Hollow Core Bypass Channel

The inflatable bladder features a hollow steel or aluminum central conduit. While the outer bladder presses the resin sleeve outward against the pipe walls, live sewage and water continues to flow through the center uninterrupted!

Not sure if patching or full lining is right for your pipe?

We run a full camera inspection to see exactly what's happening inside your line, then walk you through whether patching or full lining is the right fit for your pipe.

I had a very positive experience with Twin Plumbing Solutions and Parker. He was warm, professional, attentive, knowledgeable, and very easy to communicate with throughout the process. He took the time to explain what he was seeing, discussed the different repair options with me, and gave me a clear written quote. What especially impressed me was how quickly everything was handled. I requested a quote and the work was completed the same day. The price also felt very reasonable for the scope of the work. Parker worked efficiently and carefully, and he even took care of an unrelated clogged half-bath faucet that had not been flowing at full pressure, without charging me anything extra. That was very much appreciated. Most importantly, the plumbing issue appears to be fully resolved. It is now the second day after the work was completed and everything is working well with no problems that I can see. Overall, excellent service, good communication, thoughtful attention to detail, and a very professional experience. I would gladly use Twin Plumbing Solutions again and highly recommend Parker and the team.

Parker is the most responsive and honest plumber I have ever worked with. He answered my call and made arrangements to evaluate my plumbing crisis the same day. His evaluation and visit was free of charge! No service call charge. He was professional and personable and quickly earned my trust. After an evaluation, he provided me with an estimate that was reasonable for the scope of work required. All of his estimates are sent electronically and once I clicked on the accept button, Parker reached out and we got the job scheduled. The day of the work, Parker was good at communicating his estimated time of arrival and was sensitive to my work schedule. The job was completed, checked and tested very quickly. Twins plumbing did an exceptional job, were reasonably priced and were trust worthy and reliable. I honestly couldn’t ask for a better experience.

We’ve had such a great experience with Twin Plumbing Solutions! This is the second time we’ve used their services, this time for a different office location, and once again they were fantastic. Both of our offices are located in DC, which can sometimes make coordinating service a little more complicated. One of our locations is also in a federal building, so there were additional requirements and documentation needed before they could be approved to perform the work. Twin Plumbing Solutions was incredibly responsive and helpful throughout the entire process. They provided everything we needed to obtain approval, scheduled the visit promptly, and got the job done without any issues. Jessy and his team were professional, reliable, easy to work with, and extremely responsive. It’s refreshing to work with a company that makes the entire process so easy from start to finish. We will definitely continue using Twin Plumbing Solutions for our offices and highly recommend them!

Five-star service! I was in a complete panic when my shower valve burst, but Twin Plumbing came to the rescue. They responded and Jesse arrived the very same day I called, which was a lifesaver. Jesse was incredibly friendly, kind, and reassuring from the moment he walked in. He was professional and went above and beyond to be helpful during a stressful situation. To top it all off, the price was great and very reasonable. I will definitely be calling Twin Plumbing Solutions again for any future plumbing needs!

We have a 100 year old bungalow in Takoma Park with one bathroom and a main sewer line that had backed up six times in under two years. The original pipe was terra cotta and tree roots were coming in every few feet. Twin Plumbing lined the whole run with a new pipe from the inside, re-piped the old cast iron stack in the basement, and found and repaired a broken section under the basement floor that nobody had caught before. The job finished right on schedule. What I appreciated most was that they explained what they were doing in plain language at every step, which is not something I've gotten from every plumber I've hired. Professional, easy to have in the house, and straight with me about what they were finding. They also pulled together the documentation I needed for a Maryland historic tax credit application, broken out the way the state wanted it. They didn't have to do that, and it saved me a lot of back and forth. Good work. Would hire them again.

Twin Plumbing Solutions did an amazing job replacing our sewer line. Our entire inside sewer line was completely rotted out, and I was worried we would have to tear up the basement floor to replace it. Instead, they installed a 20-foot trenchless CIPP liner, which allowed them to restore the sewer line without digging up our basement floor. The whole process went smoothly, the crew was professional, and they saved us from a huge mess and costly floor repairs. I highly recommend Twin Plumbing Solutions to anyone dealing with damaged or deteriorated sewer lines! Best plumbing company in Montgomery County

I found Twin Plumbing Solutions via Yelp and compared the reviews there to the ones on Google. 5-star across the board, and my experience so far is the same. Jesse has been very responsive to the problems I've had with my garbage disposal and kitchen sink, has explained the issues and solutions clearly, and their prices seem very fair. I'm already planning to have them replace my hot water heater later this year.

This place has saved me twice. Once from a shower that had been broken for over two years. Then less then 72 hours later...my toilet exploded(not really, but it overflowed in an obnoxious way). Now these two things were entirely unrelated but I had no one else to call and they rose to the occasion. They cam out gave me a great price and just saved my Sunday night. I owe them big time. They are professional and kind. I will definitely be calling them back for future plumbing help.
SERVICE OVERVIEW

How We Patch a Damaged Pipe Without Digging Up Your Yard

When only one section of a sewer or drain line is damaged, tearing up the whole run doesn’t make sense. We run a camera inspection to find the exact defect and confirm it’s isolated enough for a patch. We clean the area so the resin bonds properly, then position a resin-saturated sleeve directly over the damaged section and expand it against the pipe wall. Once the resin cures, we run a final camera pass to confirm the seal holds and the line is clear. The result is a seamless, structural repair to just the section that needed it, with the rest of your pipe left untouched.

Can a small sewer leak fix itself over time, or does it always get worse?

It almost never fixes itself, and in most cases it gets worse quietly before it gets worse visibly. A hairline crack or a single separated joint will keep letting groundwater in and wastewater out, which slowly erodes the soil around the pipe. That erosion is often what eventually causes the sinkholes or soggy yard patches homeowners actually notice. Our guide on warning signs of sewer line failure covers what to watch for before a small issue turns into a bigger repair.

DIY point repair kits exist, but most aren’t designed to the same tolerances as professional CIPP systems, and a poorly sealed patch can trap debris or fail within a year, sending you right back to square one, except now with a harder-to-diagnose problem underneath a failed patch. Before attempting any repair, a proper diagnosis matters more than the fix itself. Our drain cleaning services page explains the difference between clearing a blockage and actually repairing pipe damage, which is a distinction a lot of DIY approaches miss.

You genuinely can’t tell from symptoms alone. Recurring backups can come from a single blocked or damaged section just as easily as from widespread deterioration, and guessing wrong means paying for the wrong repair. A sewer camera inspection is really the only reliable way to see whether you’re dealing with one isolated defect or a line that needs a broader fix.

That depends entirely on what let them in the first place. If roots got in through a crack or a separated joint, sealing that opening permanently should stop them from returning through that same spot. But if the surrounding soil and trees haven’t changed, new roots can still find their way in elsewhere along an aging line. Hydro jetting is sometimes used afterward as ongoing maintenance to clear any regrowth before it becomes a blockage again.

It depends on where the work happens and how much of the line is involved. Repairs contained entirely within your property, especially smaller point repairs, often need less paperwork than a full line replacement tying into the municipal main. Requirements can also vary by county, so it’s worth confirming coverage for your specific area rather than assuming. Our service areas page outlines where we handle permitting directly as part of the job.
